As part of an ongoing initiative, the Government of Nunavut has been collecting telemetry locations for three herds found within the Kivalliq region of Nunavut since 1993. The telemetry data combines satellite and GPS derived coordinates with time and date information for each location. The locations and movements are tracked to enable the characteristics of the herd, locations of important habitat and other, within year and between year, seasonal habitat and behavioural variations to be examined.
Caslys developed a web-based application integrating home range maps with a series of animations to allow these data to be visualised more effectively. The application allows users to select a herd, and a year or season of interest, and view the herd’s movement for the selected time period.
