Caslys Consulting is currently working with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) to help prepare and implement the Next-Generation 911 (NG911) system. NG911 is a digital, internet protocol (IP) based system that will replace the standard analog 911 infrastructure currently in place. The core of these NG911 projects is to ensure that all address and road information across a region are accurate through review and data capture; then translated to the latest National Emergency Number Association (NENA) dataset schema. This is done by consolidating existing address and road centerline data from ACRD, the B.C. Government, and all participating communities into the NG911 NENA standard dataset.
The key benefits for NG911 are: an upgraded emergency response system that is designed to work with mobile device; better coordination between agencies; and allows for precises location information and more data connectivity: Texts, Images, Videos.
This process involves, but is not limited to, identifying and maintaining the status of properties and parcels requiring additional unit numbering or missing addresses. Updates to the Digital Road Atlas (DRA) feature geometry to address discrepancies between road centerline data, along with review of the road naming and Indigenous road name spelling, is also required. Ground truthing and field verification are also conducted as needed to verify signage on-site against GIS data, with summaries of discrepancies provided to ensure accuracy. These field assessments are done collaboratively with community and First Nations members, especially in more remote areas. To facilitate the review and editing of address data for future review and updates, we are designing a web-based platform that displays newly created GIS address data populated with preliminary attribution. This platform will highlight errors, gaps, and areas of concern to be reviewed by local staff members. It provides access to staff in participating communities, allowing them to review address data and make necessary edits, removals, or additions without the need for detailed GIS software knowledge or experience.
Caslys is also engaged with other regions to assist with their NG911 program; we work hands on with our clients to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the NG911 data, its impact and importance and are excited we can be a part of such a valuable initiative over the coming years.
